An expert can make or break your case.
The, the first expert I'm going to go over is a plumbing expert. I used a plumbing expert and, uh, involved a bathtub and the temperature of the water that was being fed into an apartment building. The expert that I ended up hiring actually wrote the national standards for apartment buildings and the temperatures that water can be set at. And why this was so pivotal in the case is because the defense prepared their own expert report. Their expert cited to the very code that my expert wrote and was trying to take the position that my expert did not understand the code.
When I brought to the defense's attention that the expert they were criticizing was in fact the person who wrote the code, They quickly withdrew their expert report. Another type of expert we use frequently at the Levin Firm is called an accident reconstructionist. An accident reconstructionist is an engineer who is qualified and trained in how to rebuild the mechanics of a car accident. They use a lot of high-tech equipment. And computers to analyze the physics.
They use all sorts of data points. They can use the black boxes that are inside of cars. They can also use physical evidence. I've had cases where it involved a pedestrian car accident. She was struck so violently, she was struck out of her shoes, and her body was thrown, I think, 60 or 70 feet.
And the car that hit her didn't have a black box, so we weren't able to pull We're not able to prove with that kind of specificity the speed that the car was traveling, but the way we were able to prove it is based off of the throw distance of her body. The accident reconstructionist was able to prove in that particular case that the defendant was speeding. The last expert that will also play a huge role in, in many of my cases, I get I see circumstances all the time where my clients suffer an injury and now they're incapable of performing their job. And what a vocational expert will do is, uh, opine on your qualifications and your capacity and what you're able to do now that you've suffered, uh, this harm. The other thing that they'll do is put a dollar amount on what that new profession or activity has.
For instance, let's say you're a construction worker and you suffer a very bad leg injury that makes you incapable of getting around anymore. You may have made— I'm gonna make up
